(WMC-TV) - Newly re-elected Memphis City Council member Janis Fullilove vowed to keep her eye on Mayor A C Wharton Friday, but backed off comments she made after Thursday's election.

After being re-elected Thursday evening to Super District 8, Position 2, Fullilove told reporters she would be a thorn in the side the mayor.

"At times when you're frustrated, we say thing we shouldn't say, and my grandmother always told me to think before you speak, and I didn't," she said Friday.

Fullilove was upset because Mayor Wharton's campaign endorsed her opponent in the City Council race, Rosalyn Nichols.

"Of course it's upsetting, because there was no other mayor that had done that except B. Crump, and I thought those days of segregation and degradation were over," she said.

Friday, Fullilove pledged to work hard to change the climate of the city, and to continue to push hard to have city workers' pay cuts reinstated, and to make sure retirees get their benefits.

"We're going to continue to fight for that - that four point six, I promise you," she said.

Friday, Wharton said he had spoken with Fullilove, and that "all is well" between the two of them.

"Of course I'm going to work with him," Fullilove said. "I'm not going to be opposed to my mayor.  No I'm not, but I'm going to question my mayor."

By a large majority, Mayor Wharton was also re-elected Thursday night.
