Government, Facebook team up for jobs initiative

(WMC-TV) - Unemployment's on the rise in the Mid-South, but now job-seekers can find help on Facebook.

Most people probably use Facebook to goof off at work but if you're unemployed, the federal government says the web site is a powerful job-finding tool.

The Department of Labor says it's the perfect place land a new career. Because hundreds of millions of people are on the social networking site and thousands of companies have Facebook pages, government officials say it makes sense to use the site to link employers with potential employees.

The new plan also takes existing job search programs and, by putting them on Facebook, the federal government hopes they'll be easier to find. So now, instead of scouring the Internet looking for job resources, you can just log onto Facebook.

You'll be able to find links to career centers in our area, educational opportunities and apprenticeships. There's even a site that will help you find a new career with the skills you already have.

The Department of Labor hopes to eventually bring similar services to Twitter and LinkedIn.
