Germantown Deputy Court Clerk admits theft, resigns

(WMC-TV) - Germantown's Deputy Court Clerk resigned Tuesday after admitting to stealing city funds.

Janet Donnell resigned after a discrepancy was discovered by the city's accounting manager.

The discrepancy was found when a citizen sent a check to the city that was supposed to go into two different accounts. When the money was deposited in the wrong account, the accounting manager took a closer look and stumbled upon the inconsistency.

When the accounting department dug deeper, Donnell confessed. A Germantown spokesperson did not say which city account showed the discrepancy.

According to city officials, Donnell's actions are being investigated by the Germantown Police Department and an independent audit firm. A Germantown spokesperson said Donnell is cooperating with the investigation.

Donnell, 44, worked for Germantown for 16 years. At the time of her resignation, she made just under $41,000 per year.

Currently, she is still eligible to receive her pension.
