(WMC-TV) - At least one thief chose some strange vehicles to steal for joyrides Thursday night – three DeSoto County School buses.
District officials say the buses were stored behind locked gates on school campuses when they were taken.
"Every few years, we have a bus stolen and in the past it has been kids that want to take the bus for a ride," said Tom Spencer, associate superintendent of finances and operations. "This is a very serious offense that costs taxpayers money. There will be consequences when we determine who took the three buses, and caused damage to them and our locked fences."
Investigators say two of the vehicles were returned by the thief and a third was recovered in Olive Branch at the corner of Jefferson and Stonewall.
All of the buses were damaged.
"We have good surveillance, and will prosecute the offenders to the full extent of the law," Spencer said.
