(WMC-TV) - Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis dedicated 16 new homes Saturday in the organization's first planned development.
Marshita Walls was thrilled to have a place she can call home. Walls is one of more than a dozen families who were able to buy a brand new home with the help of Habitat for Humanity.
"For the families, it really is a piece of the American dream for them, because the individuals we work with at Habitat for Humanity could not otherwise purchase a home," said Jessica Hord with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis.
This fall, Habitat Memphis began construction in their first ever planned development, Trinity Park.
"It's essentially our first ever, from the ground up Habitat subdivision," said Hord.
Homeowners purchase their homes with a zero interest mortgage. They also invest hundreds of hours in sweat equity and complete a 15-week homeowner preparedness course.
"I was able to accomplish a lot of things on saving in the future," said Walls.
Walls said this is a chance for her and her four children to have a place to call home.
"It just means so much when it comes to, you know, a single parent myself, able to buy their own home," she said. "It's a great feeling."
