(WMC-TV) - Two people were shot at Cherry and Boyce in East Memphis Friday after shots rang out in a large group of children on their way home from school.
"A fight started and there were people armed with handguns who started firing shots," said Major Tracy Gossett with the Memphis Police Department.
When the gunfire cleared, 14-year-old Laqueisha Foster had been shot in the leg and another child's mother shot in the hip.
"We seen my cousin's boyfriend's mother fall to the ground, and then we saw my sister fall behind her," said the victims sister, Lateria Foster.
"This man came and wanted to fight one of the boys," said the victim's grandmother, Annie Heaston.
The mother tried to break up the fight when shots were fired. Neighbors said the children always walk home in large groups.
"I turned her because the street was blocked," said neighbor John Graham. "When I turned, they started popping the caps."
Heaston said the shooter was a grown man and not one of the children. Authorities did not arrest anyone at the scene.
"Many people out there want to be a man, then when they are in jail, they are crying like a baby," she said. "He needs to be in jail crying like a little baby right now."
The mother is reportedly in critical condition, while Laqueisha Foster is in non-critical condition.
