Shelby Co. Election Commission to give photo IDs to voters

(WMC-TV) - Starting next year, voters in Tennessee will have to show a government-issued photo ID before casting a ballot.

The Shelby County Election Commission is hoping to give voters a head start.  Free voter IDs were available Saturday at the East Shelby Drive and Summer Avenue Driver Service Center.

The sites will be opening on the first Saturday of each month for IDs and to add photos to non-photo ID holders.

The election commission is altering employee schedules to make the service available on Saturdays.

"This is a good thing they're doing, the first Saturday of each month, because don't like to stand in long lines," said voter Thomas Harris.  "I've read some bad stuff in the paper over the past month, so yeah, it's a good thing."
