Bulldogs Down Aggies 30-22 On Senior Day

The South Carolina State Bulldogs (6-4, 5-2 MEAC) defeated MEAC rival N.C. A&T State Aggies (4-6, 3-4 MEAC) 30-22, Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium/Willie Jeffries Field.

SC State saluted 18 Bulldogs players who played their final home game of the season.

Senior Donovan Richard had an outstanding game finishing with 13 tackles and one interception, while kicker/punter Blake Erickson went 3-4 in field goals hitting from 31,45 and tying his career long with a 48-yarder on the day.

"I am so proud of our players, especially the seniors who made their last appearance before a home crowd, said SC State head coach Buddy Pough." I really appreciate what they did for our program.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick 14-3 lead when redshirt sophomore quarterback Kindle Lewis connected junior wide receiver Larry Raper on a 14-yard touchdown toss with 4:14 left in the first quarter. Lewis then threw a 28-yard strike to Wallace Miles at the 13:30 mark in the second quarter to give the Aggies the lead.

Senior Devonne Quattlebaum pull the Bulldogs within a score on a 55-yard interception for a touchdown to make the score 14-10. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Richard Cue's 37-yard touchdown pass to Tyler McDonald gave the Bulldogs the lead17-14 with 6:18 left in the first-half.

SC State took a 17-14 lead into halftime.

Pough stated, "We had to dig deep the entire game despite what the score may say."

The Bulldogs jumped on early in the third quarter when Cue connected  with senior tight end DeWain Clark on a 14-yard hit  to extend the lead to 10, 24-14.Erickson kicked two of his three field goals in the third quarter to give SC State a 30-14 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

N.C. A&T would not be denied and pull within a score, 30-22 on a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown at the 11:58 mark in the fourth quarter.  The Bulldog defense proved why they are the best in the league holding the Aggies to prevail with the victory.

Quarterback Richard Cue led the passing attack for SC State throwing 13-of-27 along with three interceptions for 161 yard, while rushing for 74 yards on 14 carries. Senior Donovan Richard spearhead the defense, while junior Courtney Ingram and senior linebacker LaTaris Douglas both each finished with 7 tackles on the day.

"Well the victory by Norfolk State over Morgan State sealed our fate (as far as playoffs) but did the best we could," said Coach Pough. "We still got a chance to finish 7-4 and that's not bad but our players have played so hard."

Next up SC State will close out the season in Savannah, GA to take on newcomer and MEAC foe Savannah St. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
