IDEXX announces multi-million dollar expansion, new jobs

(WMC-TV) - IDEXX Laboratories announced a $13.5 million multi-year expansion of its Memphis reference laboratory and distribution center Friday.

Since 2002, the facility has more than quadrupled its workforce, and this most recent expansion will result in 90 new jobs by the end of 2012.

"Governments don't create jobs, but governments can create the environment that fosters the development of jobs," said Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell.

Additionally, 95 percent of the expansion was completed by local contractors, with nearly all construction materials procured through local vendors.

"We've also hired a number of graduates from the local technical schools here and they're doing a great job of helping us to take care of our customers," said Johnny Powers with IDEXX Laboratories.

The reference lab in Memphis is the country's largest.  Employees work around the clock providing pet healthcare services, including diagnostic tests to detect diseases of pets throughout the world.

"I'm proud to know IDEXX stepped up and the digital x-ray machines and blood testing machine that we'll have in the new facility is courtesy of IDEXX," Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said.  "Give them a round of applause."

"When we enhance the health and well-being of pets, we're enhancing the well-being of pet owners," said Jonathan Ayers with IDEXX Laboratories.  "Pets are an important part of our life."

The company will start taking applications for the new jobs next year.
