Food bank offers help to struggling Mid-Southerners

(WMC-TV) - The Mid-South Food Bank needs your help this holiday season.

The tough economy and high unemployment rate have forced more people to rely on groups supported by the food bank for help.

Monday morning, volunteers from FedEx came to the Mid-South Food Bank to lend a helping hand.

Volunteers spent the morning sorting through beans, corn and other canned goods inside the food bank's sorting area.

"We're checking the dates, making sure that they're not past due and if they are, we don't stock those," said Lisa Faust-Woddard, a FedEx employee. "And we make sure there are no dents in them and making sure they're all good cans of food."

It's a lot of work and having volunteers donate their time helps the food bank save lots of money.

"And by people contributing their time or their dollars to help us, that really continues our push or efforts to get food out to those needed areas," said Tonya Bradley, the food bank's CEO.

The group is a major supplier of more than 300 charitable feeding programs, a list that includes agencies from the Union Mission to Barron Heights Transitional Center for Veterans.

"It's great," said Ruthie Williams, of Barron Heights Transitional Center. "I mean, you know money is short everywhere and just to be able to come in here and pick up some of the things to help along with our order is just great."

Part of the food bank called the "pantry," looks like a supermarket. Organizations can pick out everything from meats to bakery items.

"Well, I'm getting just about a little of everything," said Williams laughing.

The Mid-South Food Bank feeds about 200,000 people a year and its goal is to eliminate hunger one meal at a time.

The Action News 5 Holiday Food Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7. We will be live throughout the Mid-South collecting food and money for the food bank.
