(WMC-TV) – A tractor trailer slammed into a gas station late Wednesday morning near I-40 and Airline Road.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the truck lost control while exiting I-40 onto Airline Road, authorities said. The truck hopped a curb, and slammed into an empty donut shop attached to the gas station.

"The truck was loaded with cell phones, with potpourri, candles, and various Christmas items destined for a local Wal-Mart," said Shelby County Fire Department spokesperson Brent Perkins.

The truck was NOT carrying any hazardous cargo, authorities at the scene said.

The two people in the convenience store managed to jump out of harm's way, but the driver of the truck and a passenger were hurt.

"The male was taken to the MED via ambulance. He's in serious condition," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington. "The female was taken via ambulance Air Wing. She was airlifted to the MED. She is also in serious condition."

On his way home for Thanksgiving, Rick Ricks had just pulled into the station to pump gas. The truck missed him by inches.

"I heard the swish as it was passing me," he said. "That'll stand the hair up on the back of your neck.
