Two mothers arrested for leaving kids in car while shopping

(WMC-TV) - Two Mid-South mothers were arrested and charged with child endangerment after leaving their children in the car while they went shopping Thursday night.

Forrest City police said Jasmine Adaway, 24, and Daffany Payne, 20, left their children in the car while they went into Walmart around 11:00 p.m. Thursday.

A St. Francis County Sheriff's deputy discovered six children ranging in age from one to six years old in the car after an alarm went off.  The children told the deputy their mother was inside Walmart shopping.

Investigators found their Adaway, who said Payne, her cousin, was supposed to be with the children in the car running the heater.

A Forrest City police officer touched the hood of the car and said it was cold, indicating the car had not been on for some time.  The temperature at the time was 41 degrees.

Investigators said Payne told them she was not supposed to be with the children.  She and Adaway went inside Walmart together.

A man at the address listed for Adaway told Action News 5 that Adaway's 10-year-old sister was supposed to be watching the children.  He said Adaway would tell her story in court.
