(WMC-TV) - A mother of five was found in a pool of blood Tuesday morning, but police don't who shot her.
Lataska Applewhite was found shot to death inside a home in the 200 block of Stoneham, near the intersection of East Shelby Drive and Neely.
"My neighbor called me and told me to come out and see what was going on," said neighbor James Bishop.
Longtime residents like Bishop watched as police converged on the street, an unusual sight on Stoneham.
"We had a break-in 40 years ago and we hadn't been bothered since," he said.
Police dispatchers received a call around 2:30 a.m. that a woman was wounded inside 239 Stoneham. Inside the home, police found Applewhite lying in a pool of blood, dead of a gunshot wound to the head.
Police were still on the scene mid-afternoon Tuesday, nearly 12 hours after the crime and officers were still searching the house for clues.
Police say there is no one in custody, but say they are working the case diligently.
"People just killing one another, you know," said Bishop. "That's how it is."
Applewhite would have turned 39 on Christmas.
