Mayor Wharton proposes bonuses for city employees

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton wants to offer all city employees a bonus this holiday season.

Wharton said across the board budgets left the city with a surplus at the end of the fiscal year.  This week, to ask the Memphis City Council to give all employees a one time 1.5 percent bonus.

"We made a commitment that as soon as we were able to realize funds that had not been previously assigned to another expenditure, that they would come back to the employees," said Wharton.  "And we'll be asking the council to do that.  It will be a 1.5 percent, a minimum of 600 bucks."

Wharton said he will present the proposal to the Memphis City Council this week.  The bonus would cost the city about $4.5 million.
