Consumer Reports: Top-rated Cell Phone Carriers

(WMC TV) - The following are highlights of Consumer Reports' survey ratings of cellular phone services. You can read about the survey in detail inside the magazine's latest issue:

* Sprint and Verizon tied in overall satisfaction. Sprint earned higher marks for value. "Sprint is the last of the big carriers to offer unlimited data plans, which can make a big difference if you surf the web or if you download lots of app's and videos," said Rosalind Tordesillas of Consumer Reports.

* For consumers who only call and text, CR and its readers recommended Consumer Cellular. "Consumer Cellular is definitely worth considering," Tordesillas said. "When we compared plans, this company had the best rates most often, especially for the basics."

* TracFone earned the top spot in prepaid cellular services. "There's no contract with prepaid phones," said Tordesillas. "You just pay for minutes or texts as you go."

* Tordesillas said consumers should consider shopping discounted cell services and phones at Walmart, Costco or RadioShack. She said the selection may not be as wide, but it is possible to save money.
