Family, friends say goodbye to J. Blackfoot

(WMC-TV) - Memphis music royalty gathered in South Memphis Saturday morning to say goodbye to Bar-Kays lead vocalist J. Blackfoot.

The Greenville, Mississippi native recently died of cancer.

It was standing room only at Christ Missionary Baptist Church, after his family entered the sanctuary wearing all white.

Blackfoot, whose real name is John Colbert, first gained fame in the group The Soul Children with legends Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

Porter gave a eulogy, along with former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, singer Bobby Rush and other music greats.

"He is a tremendous loss, not only to Memphis and the music community here, but throughout the world," said Porter.  "He is certainly a part of me and Isaac."

Herenton called Blackfoot a gift.

"There will be a lot of mayors in Memphis, but I was always his mayor," said Herenton.

Blackfoot passed away just one week after the one-year anniversary of his wife's death.  The 65-year-old leaves behind four daughters and three sons.
