Memphis man charged with baby's murder

(WMC-TV) – A Memphis man is facing murder charges in connection with the death of six-month-old's death this week.

Officers say 23-year-old Ronnie Wilkerson admitted to shaking six-month-old Anaya Jones three separate times on December 9.

Wilkerson told investigators he was trying to wake the little girl up so her diaper could be changed, according to court records.

The baby became unresponsive after the third time she was shaken and was taken to Le Bonheur in critical condition. The child died on December 11 from brain trauma.

Wilkerson is charged with first degree murder.

Family members said the charge does not fit what really happened.  They described Wilkerson as a child at heart who loves children.

"I do not believe that he did that intentionally," said Wilkerson's aunt, Vernice Hall.  "He would not dare hurt that baby."

Patsy Campbell, Wilkerson's grandmother, said her grandson was never in trouble.  He got his certificate in accounting from Job Corp and has two children of his own.

"They don't understand what is going on because they're looking for their dad every day," said Campbell.

Campbell said Wilkerson performed CPR on the child after calling 911 and was able to get her breathing until paramedics arrived.

Wilkerson's bond has not been set.  He is due back in court next Wednesday.
