Teen found shot in busy parking lot

(WMC-TV) – A teenager was found shot in a busy shopping center parking lot Wednesday night.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the 17-year-old victim was found shot in the torso in the parking lot at Sam's Club, 7475 Winchester, but was not shot there. Investigators said the shooting victim made his way there from another location.

Another victim was also taken straight to the hospital.

The victim used a cell phone to call for help.  He was apparently shot in the 4800 block of Phipps Drive, not far from Sam's Club.

"Two groups of juveniles, might be gang-related," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.  "They had gotten into a disagreement of some sort.  Someone pulled out a gun and began shooting."

The victim was transported to the MED.  Late Wednesday night, he was listed in serious but stable condition.

The second victim, 18-year-old Durante Stewart, told investigators he was in the area of the shooting, but was not involved in the argument.

At Sam's Club, a number of teenagers were handcuffed and loaded into the back of patrol cars.

"It looks like crime is everywhere.  It is just ridiculous," said shopper Tasha Williams.  "People need to stay at home and raise their children and try to raise them the right way."

The teenagers who were handcuffed at the scene were taken in for questioning.  Authorities were not sure what led to the gunfire.
