6 DeSoto County schools get tornado safe rooms

(AP) - DeSoto County Schools will soon begin designing safe rooms on six elementary campuses, thanks to Federal Emergency Management Agency and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency grant money.

Associate Supt. of Finance and Technology Thomas Spencer said at Wednesday's school board meeting that each 5,000-square-foot building would cost $1.1 million, but the district would be responsible for only 5%, or just over $59,000 each.

The Commercial Appeal reports FEMA would pay 70%, or $892,000, and MEMA would pay 20%, or about $237,000. The total DCS cost is just under $357,000 for construction at Walls, Lewisburg, Hernando, Olive Branch, Horn Lake and Southaven's Hope Sullivan elementary schools.

The proposed goal is to bid the project in mid-spring and start building in early summer.
