Father grief-stricken after shaking death of daughter

(WMC-TV) - The father of a six-month-old who police said was shaken to death said Thursday he is in a daze.

"Losing a kid, it's just a hard feeling," said Nigel Raines.

Police said six-month-old Anaya Jones died after she was shaken by her uncle.

"Since she died, I can't sleep, I can't eat," said Raines.  "Every time I close my eyes, I see her face just knowing that I wouldn't be able to hold her anymore.  Never get to see her go to school."

Jones was described as sweet, content and happy.  Raines last saw his daughter the Sunday before she died.

"I still got a shirt that she puked up on," he said.  "I hadn't thrown it in the washing machine or anything.  Just been holding it.  And that's the only thing I can just seem to ease my mind with."

Jones' maternal uncle, Ronnie Wilkerson, was arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Wilkerson's family has come to his defense, and Raines said he will not rush to judgment.

"I know he kept her on several occasions and nothing happened," said Raines.  "He takes care of the other kids and everything.  My condolences go out.  I'm praying for him as well, but I just want to know."

Raines said answers are hard to come by.

"She knows that I love her," he said.  "I've been beating up on myself.  I just wish it could have been me instead of her."

Visitation for Jones will be next Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at N.J. Ford Funeral Home.  The funeral will be next Friday at 3:00 p.m.
