Two teens charged with killing young mother

(WMC-TV) - Two teenagers charged with killing a young Mid-South mother were indicted on first degree murder charges Thursday.

Fred Beal and Brandon Holmes, who were 16 and 17 respectively at the time of the murder, are accused of killing 21-year-old Amelia Campbell on Shasta last July.  Prosecutors said 25-year-old Cremario Smith gave the gun to Holmes.

Campbell's four-year-old son now lives with his aunt after his mother was shot to death right next to him.

Campbell and her son were with her cousin, Jerrica Reed, and another man in a front yard in the 2300 block of Shasta Street in North Memphis when the survivors said two boys came out of nowhere.  They demanded money and started shooting.

"When they said get down the second time, they just started shooting," said Reed.  "There was no time to get down.  If you got down you were lucky enough to get down."

Authorities said Campbell had earphones in and did not hear the shooter's demands when she was shot.  A male was also shot, but survived.

Reed said Campbell's three children will have to face growing up without their mother.

"He just talks about it a lot," said Reed.  "He says, 'my mother is dead and she got shot.'"

"I miss my momma," said Campbell's son.  "I miss her."

Along with Beal and Holmes, Smith was charged with providing the murder weapon just before the shooting.

Saturday would have been Campbell's 22nd birthday.  Her family released 22 balloons into the sky in her honor.  They said they will be front and center for her murder trial.
