4 Miss. River bridges to get upgrades

(AP) - Four bridges spanning the Mississippi River will get $9.8 million in retrofits, including closed circuit television cameras and dynamic message signs, in an effort to provide real-time river monitoring for barge traffic.

The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants to the Mississippi Department of Transportation will pay for improvements to the Helena, Greenville, Vicksburg and Natchez-Vidalia highway bridges.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said a barge hitting a bridge can shut barge and river traffic down for days.

The Commercial Appeal reports the grant was 1 of 46 TIGER grants worth $511 million announced Thursday by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
