Mother charged after newborn tests positive for cocaine, marijuana

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South mother is facing charges after her baby was born with drugs in his system.

Terrikah Clinton gave birth to a baby boy on November 19 at Methodist South Hospital.  Investigators said her son tested positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Clinton is charged with reckless endangerment.

The Department of Children Services told police Clinton agreed to enroll in the Babylove Program for parents with substance abuse issues.  She does not have an arrest record, but she is not the first new mother arrested under these circumstances.

"Cocaine in a woman's system is also passed on to the woman's child," said Shelby County District Attorney spokesman Vince Higgins.

In August, investigators charged Mildred Chapman with reckless endangerment after her newborn tested positive for cocaine and opiates.

"It is more common than any of us want to admit," said Higgins.  "Of course, in this day and age, we want to protect children."

Chapman was released on her own recognizance.  She is due in court Monday to discuss a drug treatment program.

Clinton is in jail on $75,000 bond.
