MLGW board approves year-end bonuses for all employees

(WMC-TV) - The MLGW board voted against raises for employees, but members did approve millions of dollars in bonuses.

About $2 million in year-end bonuses will be split among MLGW's 2,650 employees.

"Full-time employees get a bonus of $750," said MLGW President Jerry Collins.  "That's a one-time lump sum, and part-time employees $200."

Collins said taxpayers need not worry.  The bonuses are less expensive than cost-of-living increases and fair-market value.

"The utilities across the state are getting two, three, four percent increases," said Collins.  "So this really is a very small additional compensation compared to what everybody else is getting."

MLGW is the third local agency to pass a year-end bonus within the past two weeks.

In the face of some public backlash, Shelby County recently approved year-end bonuses for every employee to the tune of more than $3.5 million.  The city approved bonuses of more than $4.5 million.

The bonus per employee is comparable across all three organizations.

"The MLGW employees are basically getting much the same thing that the city employees and county employees are getting," said Collins.  "So it's ... fair across the board."

The bonuses are not pensionable and do not roll over from one year to the next.

Collins and the five MLGW board members will not get bonuses.
