Arkansas lifting I-40 lane closure for holidays

(AP) - Arkansas highway officials say that, for the holiday season, they will lift lane restrictions along Interstate 40 in a 10-mile stretch between Little Rock and West Memphis.

Work near the Cache River started in September and has required one-lane traffic in both directions. Between Thursday and Jan. 3, two travel lanes will be open through the area because the Highway and Transportation Department expects more traffic.

Lane closures will resume next month and last until work is completed in the middle of 2013. As detours, motorists can use U.S. 70 and 79 south of Interstate 40 and U.S. 64 and 67 north of it.

On an average day, about 30,000 vehicles pass travel on I-40 near the Cache River.
