Drivers line up for hours for free gas

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South church gave away $3,000 in free gas at a Shell station on Poplar near Perkins Thursday.

Some drivers lined five hours before the gas giveaway began.  At one point, the Shell station had to call police to handle traffic.

"I'm very grateful," said free gas recipient Toshunda Buford.  "I think this is a beautiful think that they are doing."

Each car that stopped received about $40 worth of gas for free.

The Body Church, a new congregation in the Mid-South, sponsored the giveaway.  Members pumped gas as part of a goal to encourage giving during the Christmas holiday.

"We wanted to, as a church, not only express the love of Christ and everything that we proclaim, but also what we do," said Pastor Jason Ellis.  "We thought there would be no better way to do that than to come out here and bless some people with some gas in Christ's name."

To ease crowding, the church gave out cards that enabled drivers to leave and come back when the lines were less crowded.

All the gas was given away by about 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
