Gay conservative group praises Southaven Mayor Greg Davis

(WMC-TV) - Despite criticism over extravagant spending habits on the city's dime, one Republican group praised Southaven Mayor Greg Davis Thursday for his courage to admit he is gay.

Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay conservatives, claim Davis is the first elected official in Mississippi to admit he or she is gay.

Davis revealed he is gay in the midst of a $170,000 spending scandal, during which it was revealed the conservative Republican spent $67 at a gay sex shop in Canada.

Log Cabin Republicans are dedicated to representing the interest of gay and lesbian Americans while supporting core conservative values like limited government.

Organization leaders said Davis may be judged at the ballot box for his handling of city funds, but they hope neither voters nor opponents take issue with his sexuality.

Davis previously stated he plans to run for reelection next year, but is no longer talking about the ongoing investigation into his spending.

Log Cabin Republicans said they have members in Mississippi, but so far no chapters in the state.
