Police search for museum visitor who stole relics

(AP) - Lookout Mountain police are searching for a man who stole about $7,000 worth of Civil War relics from the Battles for Chattanooga Museum.

Surveillance video clearly shows a man with glasses, a flat cap and a neat gray beard entering the museum at about 4 p.m. on Dec. 12. He tells the clerk he is a Hixon schoolteacher looking into rates for bringing a class there.

He looks around before walking to an exhibit room, taking the glass pane out of a display case and grabbing a shadowbox filled with relics, including 14 valuable belt buckles.

The museum's Jeff Raabe tells the Chattanooga Times Free Press that thefts from an exhibit are extremely rare. A reward has been offered, and the video can be seen at the newspaper's website.
