Memphis woman celebrates 104th birthday on Christmas Day

(WMC-TV) - An elderly Memphis mother got Christmas and birthday presents Sunday morning in a family tradition that started more than 100 years ago.

Ever since Rosie Ferguson was born in 1907, birthdays have been special because hers falls on Christmas Day.  This Sunday, when Ferguson turned 104, plenty of relatives were on hand to help her celebrate.

Relatives said Ferguson's husband died when their four children were young.  As a single parent living in Collierville, she supported her family by working as a maid.

"Anything mama needed for us as kids, she was able to get it, and she would work it out," said her son, Willie Ferguson.

Her children said their mother was such a good provider, they grew up not knowing they were poor.

Rosie Ferguson told Action News 5 that her favorite food is fried chicken and her favorite thing to do is go riding in a car, but she has her most fun being around her children.

"She's a mom out of a million," said her daughter, Delorise Coleman.  "I wouldn't want no other mom but her.  She used to whip us a lot, I ain't going to leave that out."

In addition to raising four children, Rosie Ferguson has 36 grandchildren, and many more great-grandchildren.
