Injured dog needs help to walk again

(WMC-TV) - One group is asking the community for help to keep a dog named Joy running.

Joy, a 6-year-old English Pointer, is recovering from knee surgery after a nearly fatal hit and run.

"I've always been a big animal person," said Pointer Rescue volunteer Barbara Harmon.  "We have three cats and two dogs."

Harmon is Joy's current foster mother.

Her former foster mother, Celia Tamker, said Joy was truly a wonderful dog to have.

"She was well named," said Tamker.  "When it came to treats and dinner time, she would jump up and do a dance."

Harmon said speeders going up and down Bubba Taylor Road in Byhalia, Mississippi struck Joy and left her for dead.

"I rushed her to Open Arms in Horn Lake, and they were able to stabilize her and found out there were no internal injuries," said Harmon.

Harmon said Joy was then taken to a local hospital that was able to save her legs.

"The vet I go to, Cat and Cow, they were the ones who did both surgeries," said Harmon.

Joy's medical expenses were nearly $2,000, but Harmon said a neighbor, Loretta Hebert, left an Avon book at her door and became Joy's Avon angel.

"I'd never met her and didn't know where she lived, but I called her and found out Avon does fundraiser," said Harmon.

Harmon said the Avon fundraiser has been very encouraging and she is confident Joy will walk again.

"She still has that fighter spirit," said Harmon.  "She tries to get up, and when my other rambunctious dogs may knock her down, she jumps right back up."

Harmon said with the Avon fundraiser and community help, they have raised almost $1,600 and still needed about $400 more at the time this story was posted.

Hebert said 100 percent of her sales will go toward Joy's medical bills until all expenses are paid.
