Neighbor says homicide victim was new grandfather

(WMC-TV) - Police believe a new grandfather may have been a victim of gang violence.

Police have not released the victim's identity in a homicide investigation in the 6400 block of Summer Creek East, but neighbors said he worked two jobs to support his family.

"It's a tragedy and I'm hurting inside right now," said Earl King, who lives two doors down from the victim.

King said the victim, who he knew as "Scooby," recently became a grandfather for the first time.

Police found the victim's front storm door shattered moments before discovering him dead inside.

"They said it was a homicide," said King.  "That's the last person I thought they'd be telling me was dead was 'Scooby.'"

Investigators said the victim was shot inside the house around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.

"No ID on any suspects at this time," said Major Wardell Smith with the Memphis Police Department.  "All we know is, male juveniles."

Investigators said they are interviewing witnesses, family, friends and neighbors hoping to solve this case.

"Whoever did it, I hope they pay for it, because he was a good guy," said King.  "Give you the shirt off his back, wouldn't hurt nobody.  You only see him going to work, coming home from work.  He might come over, rake your yard or cut your yard for you.  You know, things of that nature.  He was a good guy."

Police said they have no one in custody.  If you can help solve this case, they ask you call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
