Thousands pack Downtown Memphis for New Year's Eve celebrations

(WMC-TV) - Thousands of people crowded Downtown Memphis Saturday night to ring in the new year.

Police presence was heavy, and revelers on Beale Street said they felt extremely safe.

With the Liberty Bowl and the Memphis Tigers playing at the FedEx Forum Saturday, people and fans from across the country celebrated on Beale Street.  Many said it was their first time.

With expectations of more than 20,000 people, Memphis police presence was increased, with officers on foot and watching by camera.

Crowds began gathering early to snap pictures of the Gibson Guitar before it dropped at midnight.  Meanwhile, others enjoyed the street performers who were out entertaining the crowds.

Police said there had been no incidents so far Saturday night.  They asked those attending the celebrations downtown to leave weapons and valuables at home.
