(AP) - Police officials in Memphis say their headquarters is overcrowded, but a plan to renovate older quarters is stalled.

The old city police station has sat vacant for 30 years.

The department moved to its current station in 1982 and by 1989 officials complained they needed more space.

In 2002, Memphis police considered relocating some parts of the force back to the old headquarters, according to The Commercial Appeal.

But those plans were abandoned by 2008, when Memphis City Council members voted down an estimated $40 million renovation due to budget limits.

The historic old headquarters, built in 1911, sits empty.
