(WMC-TV) – A teenager is in custody for stabbing her grandmother in DeSoto County Monday and now prosecutors are trying to decide if she'll be charged as an adult.

Sources say the 15-year-old stabbed her own 54-year-old grandmother, took the car and left the scene.

While investigators look into the facts of the case, some neighbors are still trying to make sense of what happened.

David Arnett said the attack on his neighbor is still unbelievable

"Knowing the family the way we do, it's very shocking because they are very close together," he said. "It is very unusual for something like this to happen in this neighborhood."

The stabbing happened at a home near Austin and Fogg Roads in DeSoto County.

"She was a good kid," said Arnett. "She hadn't shown any signs of anything like this."

Investigators say the grandmother managed to call 911 and gave deputies a description of the getaway car and within minutes, the teenager had been located and captured.

"They need to find out what caused it, if it was mental or just anger or whatever," Arnett said.

The teenager is in juvenile court custody now. Investigators said they're in the process of meeting with the district attorney to determine if she'll be charged as a juvenile or an adult.

"Our sympathy goes out to the one that's in the hospital and the one that's having problems that they'll get it worked out and be back like a family again, because I know that's what they want," Arnett said.

The grandmother remains hospitalized at the Med, but she is expected to make a full recovery.
