(WMC-TV) – He had been running from Memphis police for more than a month. He was finally caught while running away from police in Texas Tuesday and at first, investigators didn't realize they'd snagged a very wanted man.

LaTaska Applewhite, a 38-year-old mother of 5 children was shot dead just days after Thanksgiving.

A few days after the crime, investigators announced they were searching for her boyfriend Michael Davis.

As recently as last week, they believed he might be living out of hotels on Elvis Presley Boulevard. But it turns out, he was already locked up and had been since two days before Christmas.

"He was stopped for a routine violation, for speeding," said Lt. Fernando Parra, of the Universal City Police Department.

Universal City, TX, is more than 700 miles from Memphis. Police there said Davis initially provided officers invalid information, then tried to run away from them.

"He was eventually chased and taken into custody and then he was booked into the Bexar County Jail for evading arrest," said Parra.

Since then, Davis has been locked up in the Bexar County jail on $1,500 bond.

On Monday, the murder charge was added to his booking record. Now he's being held without bond while awaiting extradition back to Memphis.

On a Facebook page operating in Applewhite's honor, friends and family voiced their pleasure with his arrest, while others wished it would have brought her back. Still others were relieved.

"We can all rest easy," wrote one person on the Facebook Wall.

An extradition hearing has not yet been set. Davis' first scheduled court date in Texas is set for January 30 on the evading arrest charge.
