Recently released Tate Co. sex offender arrested again

(WMC-TV) - A North Mississippi sex offender recently released from prison is back behind bars after being accused of sexual battery against a minor.

Jeffrey Hunter is currently accused of fondling a relative under the age of 14.  He was convicted of two rapes almost 20 years ago.

One of Hunter's victims said she believes he left cut up underwear in her mailbox in November after his release from prison.

Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said Hunter was charged with fondling a young family member who visited him while he was in prison.

Lance said sex offenders he has dealt with in the past typically do not offend again so quickly.

"We manage 42 sex offenders in this county," said Lance.  "This is the first time I can recall just being released and these types of circumstances surround them so quickly."

Hunter was living with a family member in rural Tate County when he was released in November.  He is behind bars in Tate County without bond.
