MPD steps up security in Cooper Young

(WMC-TV) - Cooper Young residents in Midtown Memphis told Action News 5 Thursday they are impressed with the Memphis Police Department's steps to prevent violent crimes from taking place in their neighborhood.

Restaurants were full Thursday night for the monthly Cooper Young night out, just two nights after a man was shot in the parking lot of Young Avenue Deli.

Surveillance video shows several men demanding money from the victim before shooting him in the hip.  The suspects then drove off.

"Something like that is kind of shocking," said Cooper Young resident Mitch Morelli.  "To know that you can't walk from point A to point B and get dinner and go home."

The Memphis Police Department has gone beyond patrols by setting up a SkyCop in the Bank of America parking lot, just feet away from where Tuesday's shooting took place.

"The presence is here, even more so," said Skunx Chef Pub owner Duncan Aiken.  "They are doing everything they can."

Since Tuesday's shooting, Aiken said his reservations have been cut in half.  Thursday, he urged residents to look beyond the random crime and not let criminals take over the neighborhood.

"Please don't cut us out," said Aiken.  "This is a great neighborhood.  I love this neighborhood."

The SkyCop records audio and video at 360 degrees up to several thousand feet and is fed straight to the police department.
