COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - A Covington teen died Friday night after a truck hit him as he crossed Highway 51.

Gloria Woodland is mourning the death of her son, 18-year-old Gerald Fayne.

"I know God is going to see me through it," said Woodland.  "He just came to get one of his angels."

Woodland said her world came crashing down when her grandson called around 6:30 Friday night.

"I could hear somebody screaming and hollering on the phone," she said.  "But I just couldn't understand what they were saying."

Fayne was crossing Highway 51 near Covington Airport when one car swerved around him and a truck hit him.

Woodland said she will miss her son's daily greeting when he would come home from Covington High School.

"Hollering, 'Mom, I'm home,'" said Woodland.  "He would come up to me and hug me."

The accident left shattered glass on the road just a block from Woodland's house.

Woodland said she sees her son in every room of the house.  She prayed to him with a Bible in hand at bedtime Friday.

"I said, 'Son, you beat mama to the finish line.  I know where you're at,'" said Woodland.  "And he was telling me he's all right.  He's in a better place.  He's gone where I'm trying to get."

Woodland said Fayne turned 18 in November.  He wanted to join the Army after graduation and was just starting to really apply himself in school.

"He went from a failing F all the way back up to a straight A and B student," she said.

Woodland said she knows her son was wearing dark clothing so she does not blame the driver for Fayne's death.

"We've all got a ticket and a price to go by, and it was just my child's time to go," said Woodland.

The family is still working on funeral arrangements.  Covington police are investigating the crash.
