Elvis fans celebrate his 77th birthday

(WMC-TV) - Fans from around the world were in Memphis this weekend to celebrate Elvis Presley's birthday.

Elvis would have turned 77 Sunday.  His birthday celebration kicked off at Graceland with guitarist Jose Feleciano singing "Happy Birthday."

Fans toured Graceland, sang Elvis' songs, and applauded loudly when city officials praised the king of rock and roll.

"Over a billion records sold," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.  "And we all know that's plenty, how could one man rock so many?"

"I loved Elvis, I've been a fan since I was 17 years old and still carrying on his tradition," said Pat Park from Scotland.

The annual birthday celebration pumps millions of dollars into the city.

According to the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, more than half of the tourists who visit Graceland were not even born during the time that Elvis lived.

"Let's enjoy it, keep him alive," said Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell.  "Let's keep that spirit going."
