(WMC-TV) - One is man is dead and an entire community is wondering how it happened after a fire damaged several units at an apartment complex early Monday morning.

Residents at the Butterfield Apartments off Lynnfield Road in East Memphis say the deadly fire spread quickly and forced many of them to run for their lives.

"It woke me up," said Linda Taylor. "I sat straight up in bed once I realized what the sound was and then I knew that it was a fire somewhere."

Several neighbors said they were alerted to the fire by people banging on their doors.

Firefighters were still cleaning up debris from the fire when the sun came up Monday morning.

Neighbors that spoke to Action News 5 said they didn't know the man who died, but many are still mourning his death just the same.

"Very tragic," said Mark Goodman. "I mean, anytime a life is gone it's just horrible."

Goodman was just one of many who spent the day moving items that weren't damaged by the fire. He said the intensity of the blaze is something he will never forget.

"One minute we were told there was a fire, the next minute we walked out our bedroom door and it - there was smoke you almost just couldn't see," he said.

Investigators haven't released the name of the man who died and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
