Cohen says redistricting would shift Jewish vote

(AP) - Rep. Steve Cohen of Memphis says a congressional redistricting plan being considered this week by the Tennessee legislature would remove all the major Jewish institutions and much of the Jewish vote from his district.

Cohen, the first Jewish congressman elected from Tennessee, told the Washington bureau of The Commercial Appeal that he wants those voters in his 9th District because he's represented their interests in the state Senate and in Congress for 20 years.

He said there's been a commonality of interests in social issues and foreign policy.

Under the plan, the precincts would shift to the 8th Congressional District now represented by U.S. Rep. Stephen Fincher, a Republican.

Cohen said he believes Fincher is unfamiliar with the 9th District.
