Grenade found inside dead man's Southaven home

(WMC-TV) - A dead body, a house fire and a home filled with grenades and ammunition. Now investigators in North Mississippi are working to piece together how all three are connected.

Authorities took the situation seriously. When they entered the house at 1645 Whitehead in Southaven through a window, they saw explosives rigged up to the back door which sent them back outside.

"We did see a hand grenade wired to the back door," said DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco. "There is a lot of ammunition in the house. I don't know how many weapons, but there is an excessive amount of ammunition in that house."

The Shelby County bomb squad and assisted on the case, sending a robot in to find out what investigators were dealing with. Eventually, authorities determined that the hand grenade was in fact real

"The robot is the one that pulled the hand grenade from where it was wired up and that it was not live," said Rasco.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department came to this house as a result of a house fire in Olive Branch that started around ten Monday morning. When firefighters made the scene, they found the body of a man in the house. They pulled him out, though the house was a loss. They also found the man's identification which listed the house where the hand grenade was found as his residence.

"Right now we don't know the total cause of death," Rasco said. "There has been no autopsy."

Investigators told Action News 5 the deceased man knew the owners of the burned out house. However, investigators won't say how they knew each other. For now, the deceased's neighbors are left wondering about the man they say kept a low profile.

"I've been here seven years and only seen him like ten times," said Larry Perry who lives two doors down.

The victim's truck was found parked in front of the burned out house. His body was found in the garage.
