(WMC-TV) – Frank Graham pleaded not guilty to the first-degree, premeditated, murder of his former fiance in a case that has become a symbol of the fight against domestic violence in the Mid-South.

"It's going to be hard for all of us to get through it," said Ruby Tinnon, Taffi Crawford's aunt.

Tinnon said it was a long, hard journey to get to criminal court.

"It's just almost surreal for us, even after two years," she said.

Tinnon said the fateful day in February 2010 feels like yesterday.

That's when former Memphis firefighter Frank Graham allegedly gunned down her niece, nurse Taffi Crawford, in the Delta Medical Center parking lot.

Jury selection in Graham's murder trial began Monday. Tuesday, attorneys gave opening statements to the sequestered jury.

"It's like reliving this every single day," said Tinnon. "This is just like the first day we lost her."

The prosecution says Graham planned Crawford's death after she left him. The defense says Graham was jealous when he heard Crawford was out to lunch with a fellow firefighter, but that he did not set out to kill her.

Tuesday was the first time Crawford's family had come face-to-face with Graham.

"I looked at him. I thought, 'Man, he really looks like a nice guy,'" said Tinnon. "So monsters never look like monsters."

But Tinnon said everyone loses in a situation like this.

"For my family, for his family, there is no justice," she said. "We're just hoping to be able to put this behind us and move on with the memories we all have."

Witnesses will testify this week, including those who claim to have seen indications of domestic violence in their relationship.

It's unclear if Graham will take the stand.
