Tip leads to drug bust in Carter County

Two people in Carter County face felony drug charges after authorities say they turned their home into a hot house for pot.

Investigators tell Heartland News they believe the operation had been going on for a while. Not only did authorities find 86 marijuana plants, but also $34,510 in cash stashed in the walls of their house.

According to Sheriff, Bruce VanBelle, the Collinsville Illinois Police Department called his office, saying they'd stopped Michael Bell and Mary Comfort. Illinois police told VanBelle they found about a pound of weed on them, and traced the couple back to Carter County.

VanBelle says they ran with the tip and ended up making the bust.

"We found 86 plants, high quality weed in various stages of growth," said VanBelle. "We couldn't have done it without the help of Van Buren city police, state police and other investigators."

Bell and Comfort posted bond. They are due back in court on Valentine's Day.
