Mother killed, son injured in officer-involved crash

(WMC-TV) - Traffic was snarled for hours Wednesday on Austin Peay after a Memphis police cruiser and a silver Mitsubishi Galant smashed into each other.

"According to witnesses, both had green lights, but the civilian's car made a left hand turn in front of the officer's," said Memphis Police Department spokesperson Karen Rudolph.  "The front end of the squad car struck the side of the vehicle.  It hit the passenger side."

Mervat Abdelrahman Almalhi was riding in the passenger side and later died at the hospital.  Her 18-year-old son was driving the Mitsubishi.  He remained in the hospital Thursday in non-critical condition.

Investigators said the police car was en route to a disturbance call, but not speeding or running lights and sirens.

The police car was headed south on Austin Peay, while the Mitsubishi was headed north.

The Mitsubishi was in the process of making a left turn when the two cars collided.

According to police, the left turn was legal, but the Mitsubishi failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

No citation has been issued at this point, but the investigation remains open.

One officer remained in the hospital Thursday and may require surgery on some broken bones.

There was another officer in the squad car at the time.  He has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
