New series based on "The Firm" brings back Memphis memories

(WMC-TV) - A movie with Memphis roots is now a TV series, and it can be seen right here on WMC-TV.

The new NBC series "The Firm" is based on the blockbuster film and best-selling novel.

"I remember a good majority of the movie was filmed here in Memphis," said Memphis attorney Alexander Wharton.

When you mention "The Firm," most Memphians are reminded of when Academy Award-nominated actor Tom Cruise filmed scenes in the Bluff City over a decade ago.

"Seeing your hometown in the movies is impressive, and then seeing an actor like Tom Cruise is equally impressive," said Wharton.

Cruise took a now famous ride on the then blue and white Mud Island River Park Monorail.  The monorail has since been repainted, but it is still the same one that put Memphis on the map in 1993.

Anthony Dodson is now the monorail operator at the park and said he worked as part of security during the film's production.

"Everybody was coming through in exclusive vehicles and all the extras and stuff," said Dodson.  "It was one of the most exciting times at Mud Island and also the city of Memphis."

The series will continue the story of attorney Mitch McDeere as his family emerges from witness protection.

Memphis lawyer Libby Belt said she is looking forward to watching the new show.

"I was fascinated," said Belt.  "This is going to be where it left off and where it continues on and what's going to happen next."

John Grisham, the original author of "The Firm," is an executive producer of the new series.

"The Firm" airs Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. on WMC-TV.
