(AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam has raised the University of Memphis flag in the historic quadrangle of Lambuth University.

The ceremony on Thursday commemorates the deed transfer from the United Methodist Church-affiliated private university to the state of Tennessee.

Lambuth closed in June and filed for Chapter 11 protection to negotiate its debts with its creditors. The campus sold for $7.9 million and was turned over to the Board of Regents in December, becoming the state's newest university.

Speaking before the flag-raising, Haslam said his goal is to see more Tennesseans graduate from college, according to The Jackson Sun.

More than 400 students are attending the University of Memphis Lambuth, which began the spring semester on Thursday.
