Extra Credit: White Station in running for music award

(WMC-TV) - White Station High School, already one of the premiere optional schools in Memphis for academics and sports, has a new distinction this morning and this time it's for music!

And the school could win thousands of dollars in the process, as well as today's Extra Credit.

White Station High School's Jazz Band is one of the school's many musical outlets for students in a musical education program that's ranked among the best in the nation and now a 2012 Grammy Signature Schools Semifinalist.

Freshman jazz band singer and choir member, Kasondra Caldwell is hopeful for the school's chances at the prize money ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

"We have a great music program already but, I think with more money we could just expand so much and, like, be just amazing, like, we could be breathtaking," Caldwell gushed.

Out of about 2,500 initial applicants, the field of Grammy Signature Schools has been cut to 125 schools with White Station being possibly the only school from Tennessee to make to the cut.

"We really worked hard to improve just to be the best we can be, really just encouraging the students to work hard, practice more and become the best they can," said Charles Wright, White Station's director of bands.

And being "the best" in the school's orchestra, band or choir, can bring more than monetary gain. Wright adds that documentation has proven students in arts programs of any sort have higher test scores, do better academically and have higher self-esteem than those students who are not.

Wright adds that any money awarded to the school from the Grammy's will be split among the Orchestra, Choir and Band.

The Grammy Signature Schools program was established in 1998 to recognize the top public high schools in the U.S. that are making an outstanding commitment to music education.

The finalists will be announced in March.
