Apartment fire leaves several families homeless

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Several families were left homeless and depending on the Red Cross for help after an overnight fire at an apartment complex Friday.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to a fire at the Sycamore Lake Apartment complex on Sesame Street just after midnight.

"Everything just happened so fast," said resident Erica Garner.  "It was just ridiculous."

Garner and her 9-year-old daughter moved in a week ago.  In the middle of the frozen night, they left with only what they could grab.

"It looked like I lost pretty much everything," said Garner.

The fire destroyed or severely damaged four units.

Garner credits her downstairs neighbor, Shannon Bartlett, with saving her life.

"My porch was engulfed in flames," said Bartlett.  "I ran out the door barefoot and started knocking on doors."

"Their lives were more important than my stuff being saved, so I did what I had to do," Bartlett added.

The fire was one of four the Mid-South chapter of the Red Cross responded to overnight.

"We had a very busy night," said Becky Williams with Mid-South Red Cross.

The Red Cross responders provided a hotel room to the displaced families that needed a place to stay.

"Some of the clients have begun to come in this morning to pick up food boxes and referral for other assistance," said Williams.

No one was injured in the fire.  The fire department said the blaze began from an electrical trip on a balcony.
