County considers bringing trash service to Northaven

(WMC-TV) - Getting trash out of the house and to the landfill has always been the responsibility of the residents of Northaven and Shelby County.  Now, the county is looking to change that.

"It really makes the community look real bad," said Northaven resident Willie Isaac.

Isaac has lived in the Northaven community for 33 years and said trash around the neighborhood just piles up.

"It might stay in front of the house three months," he said.

Once known as the Mayor of Northaven, Isaac said he has always paid for trash pickup.  These days, he said his neighbors just don't care.

"The people start to moving in and they'll stay in a while, and then they'll move out and leave the houses all messed up," said Isaac.

Isaac said the trash usually ends up in alleys or on the side of the road.

Shelby County Public Works Director Tom Needham said he has been listening to complaints about trash from Shelby County residents for quite some time.

"Everyone has the frustration of someone getting something for nothing," said Needham.

Needham said the county is seriously considering adding a trash fee to all Shelby County residents' utility bills, but they are still working on the details.

"We're looking at methods on how to provide a service," said Needham.

Isaac said he is glad to know the county is considering countywide trash service, even if it means paying a little more.

"They have a sewer pickup and they charge for that," said Isaac.  "They have a fire protection, they charge for that.  A little bit more wouldn't hurt.  I don't think people would mind."
